The Toyota Corolla is continually at the top of the sales charts in North America, as well as globally where the model battles it out for the title of best-selling car year after year. For 2017, the Toyota Corolla returns with basically the same characteristics that have defined its success so far such as fuel economy, safety, comfort and, since 2014, sportiness.

Not Your Boring Old Corolla

When Toyota introduced the new generation of the Corolla back in 2014, the automaker placed great emphasis on driving pleasure and sportiness, both of which had been sorely lacking in the compact Japanese sedan for a while. Yes, the Corolla was reliable and comfortable, and yes it was popular, but some buyers who like to have fun behind the wheel were reluctant to make the purchase given that letting its drive have some fun behind the wheel was not at the of the Corolla’s priorities.

All that changed three years ago. Today, the Toyota Corolla retains all the characteristics that explain its success, but it also has much sharper handling. Under the hood, most versions of the 2017 Corolla are powered by a four-cylinder, 1.8-liter engine developing 132 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque.

This engine can be mated to a six-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic gearbox with shift paddles mounted behind the wheel. Dubbed CVTI-S, the gearbox simulates gear changes (they need to be simulated since continuously variable transmissions have in theory an infinite number of speeds) in order to make the drive more stimulating.

2017 Toyota Corolla: Still Very Fuel-Efficient

In terms of fuel economy, the 2017 Toyota Corolla has an average fuel consumption rating of 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers. That said, you can also opt for the ECO LE version which is powered by a four-cylinder, 1.8-liter engine that delivers 140 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque. This engine focuses primarily on fuel consumption with an average rating of 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers.

Starting at $16,290, the 2017 Toyota Corolla offers all the comfort and reliability buyers have gotten used to. However, it is now also a lot more fun to drive, and it will put a smile on your face with its performance, in addition to being fuel-efficient. Oh, and let's not forget that it is also more spacious than the previous generation, thanks to a longer wheelbase.
