Engines and performance

First things first: where will the new CX-50 stand in the Mazda range?  It was created in order to offer a more powerful and bolder SUV, for all of those wishing for a greater sense of adventure and the possibility of driving off the beaten path.

Even if Mazda sports utility vehicles are quite agile in different types of weather and road condition, they still do not specialized in off-road driving.  This is why the CX-50 was designed, in order to offer a Mazda SUV built for a greater off-road driving experience, and that will easily stand against several of its American competitors!

Just like the CX-5 and CX-30 models, the CX-50 comes with two possible engine choices: the 2.5 L 4- cylinder Skyactiv-G can either be naturally aspirated or turbocharged.

Technical specifications have yet to be revealed, but when it comes to the CX-5, the first engine offers 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft. maximum torque, while the second offers even more power at 250 HP and 320 lb-ft. maximum torque.

Mazda also states that this SUV will have a greater towing capacity than the other models, although the exact numbers have yet to be made available.  In the next few years, a hybrid engine can also be expected… To be continued!

Just as the CX-5, the CX-50 will include the i-Activ AWS system as standard equipment, an intelligent and proactive system that adapts driving to road conditions.  Moreover, the new Mazda Intelligent Drive Select system will also allow you to choose from different driving modes:

  • Normal;
  • Sport;
  • Off-road;

Safe to say that this vehicle will be focusing on an active lifestyle and outdoor activities.  Not only will it have a greater towing capacity, it will also make driving with a trailer easier.

Exterior Design

Slightly bigger than the CX-5, the CX-50 has a sturdier build which reminds us of its adventurer’s spirit: rounded fenders, as well as a wider and longer hood contribute to its robust silhouette.  Even if it looks more imposing, it remains elegant, and maintains de same beautiful and streamlined Kodo design in its headlights and taillights, as do all the latest Mazda generations.

This SUV also stands out from the others by adding bumpers with protection plates, and in a contrasting color.  Fenders are also black.  And when it comes to color, a brand new Zircon Sand color is added to the bunch.

Sturdier and more stylised dual-tone rims are added, as well as optional all-terrain tires.

Specially designed for outdoor adventures and activities, high resistance roof railings are offered as standard equipment, so that you can easily carry all of your outdoor and sports gear.  A luggage carrier can also be an added option.  Mazda has made all of your adventures easier and more accessible, thanks to a slightly lower roofline and doors that open a full 90 degrees.

Interior

Inside, you will notice that the design is similar to that of a CX-30; a large floating screen for the infotainment system takes center stage in the dashboard, and commands are accessible from the steering wheel or with a rotary knob.  With Apple and Android integrated compatibility, the Mazda system is built to make all interactions with your vehicle as easy as possible.

A first for Mazda: the new SUV will be offering a superb optional panoramic sunroof, allowing all passengers to take advantage of a full view of their surroundings as well as bathe in natural light.  A new Terra Cotta color will be offered and seat upholstery should be made even more stain and dirt resistant.

For practical purposes, hatch opening will make cargo loading easier, as will the new elongated floors.  We still do not have numbers for cargo capacity.

Even if nothing has yet been revealed in terms of safety technologies, we can expect to have the i-Activsense at our disposal as standard equipment, as it is integrated as such in all other SUVs.  It will help you prevent front and lateral collisions by surveying lane departure, evaluating distances and more.

Stay connected with your Spinelli Mazda dealer to find out more about CX-50 prices and arrival date!  Since it is a brand new model, you will not have access to a 2021 CX-50 in inventory, yet you might be quite tempted by one of our CX-5 or CX-30 models.  Do not hesitate to ask for our advice!  We are looking forward to meeting you in dealership.
