How to choose the perfect recreational vehicle?

If you are thinking of purchasing a recreational vehicle in the short or mid-term, you will quickly notice that the amount of available models is astonishing, and that each offers different features in terms of size, weight, equipment, price and, of course, was type of vehicle is necessary for towing.

So, which recreational vehicle would best answer to your needs and budget?  Here is a sneak peek of the different models available on the market, along with their main features!

Tent Trailer

  • Prices vary between $ 15,000 and $ 30,000
  • Between 15 and 23 feet
  • Maximum occupancy is for 8 people, depending on make and model
  • Weight: between 1,500 and 3,500 pounds

When entering the world of recreational vehicles, tent trailers are often viewed as the entry models.  They are affordable and allow you to take full advantage of the excitement of camping at a lower cost, but with comfort levels that are superior to what you would find in a regular tent.

The sides of a Tent Trailer can be folded, facilitating transportation, towing and, obviously, storage.

Moreover, their light weight allows for them to be towed by several SUV models and even midsize sedans that are equipped with a V6 engine.

Hybrid Travel Trailer

  • Generally between $ 12,000 and $ 35,000
  • From 15 to 29 feet
  • Maximum occupancy is for 8 people, depending on make and model
  • Weight: between 2,500 and 3,500 pounds

Midway between a tent trailer and a Travail Trailer, the hybrid Travel Trailer has soft slide-outs at each end that, once opened, provide you with extra space for sleeping as well as added general interior space.

It is also equipped with several amenities like a bathroom, a kitchen and, in larger models, a living room area.

Finally, this recreational vehicle can be towed by most SUVs and, of course, all light trucks.

Travel Trailer/Caravan

  • Generally between $ 15,000 to over $ 110,000
  • From 12 to 42 feet
  • Maximum occupancy is for 10 people, depending on make and model
  • Weight: between 3,500 and 15,000 pounds

Travel Trailers are amongst the most popular recreational vehicles.  Even though lighter models can be towed by an SUV, they generally require a truck.

Offering a comfortable interior with 1 or 2 bedrooms as well as other sleeping spaces, you will also find a full bathroom with shower, an equipped kitchen, a living room, and some even offer an electric fireplace and cinema seats, amongst other things.

Moreover, contrary to tent trailers that have soft canvas slide-outs, Travel Trailers have entirely rigid sides and slide-outs, making it easier to heat when temperatures drop.  They also have superior insulation and soundproofing compared to a tent trailer or hybrid caravan.

Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer

  • Generally between $ 25,000 to over $ 170,000
  • Between 15 to 42 feet
  • Maximum occupancy is for 10 people, depending on make and model
  • Weight: between 7,000 and 15,000 pounds

Quite similar to a Travel Trailer, a Fifth Wheel stands out due to its particular shape. In fact, it has a front part that when towed, sits atop the pickup bed.  That is why you absolutely need a pickup truck for transport! This configuration has the advantage of offering greater stability since the caravan’s weight also spreads to the truck bed and is not only hauled behind the pickup.

Just like for the Travel Trailer, inside you will find an equipped kitchen, a closed bedroom, a dining area and loads of storage spaces, without forgetting the sliding sections that also add onto the living space dimensions.

Park Trailers

  • Generally between $ 30,000 to over $ 120,000
  • From 32 to 41 feet
  • Maximum occupancy is for 10 people, depending on make and model
  • Weight: between 10,500 and 15,000 pounds

Also called a stationary trailer, this recreational vehicle is made to be transported only occasionally.  It can also be winterized.

Perfect for seasonal campers, it can also be used as a secondary residence or even a cabin, and the interior offers as many amenities as a home, especially since the living space can be made even bigger thanks to the use of slide-outs (which vary in number depending on model).
